About

The Story Behind Jazz on the Tyne

Jazz on the Tyne features the best in jazz from North East England and beyond.  The show started in 2019 and was initially broadcast online on Hive Radio by Community Arts Project North East (CAPNE), before moving exclusively to Mixcloud.

The founders of CAPNE, Diane Gray and Ben Hudson, now operate Hive Radio Storytellers.  This project tells the stories of the North East by creating and performing high quality audio drama, which is broadcast on Anchor FM.  Meanwhile, Hive Radio on Mixcloud is now the home for jazz music focusing on the North East.

Meet Your Host

Colin Muirhead is the presenter of Jazz on the Tyne. Colin got into jazz whilst working in the US in the early 1990s and has been passionate about it ever since.  So much so that he went to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland 13 times – and wrote a book about this!

Colin aims to play jazz of all types, performed by musicians from North East England and beyond.  Duke Ellington said that there are simply two types of music: “good music and the other kind” – well, on Jazz on the Tyne, you’ll hear only great music!  The show also includes interviews with musicians and previews of upcoming events.
